Hello! Hope you are doing well. Thank you for visiting our website. I’m John, Founder and Lead Consultant at Zarura. And this is our brand story.
Our brand story in Zimbabwe begins with a one way ticket from Europe to Africa. But, the actual origins’ story, begins in 2014 – in a country so close to the UK, many regard it so – Ireland.
I was volunteering at the Africa Centre, an NGO devoted to helping reshape the perception of Africa abroad. The Africa Centre was holding one of its annual events for its campaign: Africa Also Smiles. The theme for that year was; The Use Of Images & Messages. The campaign challenged how the media seemed to always portray Africa as this destitute and ridden continent. Most of the images used for fundraising were of malnourished children — in house-fly decor. Fast-forward a few months, the Africa Centre partnered with Dublin Institute Of Technology to offer a short entrepreneur course. The lecturer challenged us to start a business in something we were passionate about, and would make a difference.
Right there and then, in my mind – Zarura was born. I vowed to one day create a brand agency that would help reshape the way African brands were perceived. And beyond perception, helping them discover their authentic identity, define a coherent message and share it with the world.
